Lessons & Lesson Attendance
We are very fortunate in East Rochester to live
in a school district where the teaching of small
group and private music lessons is recognized to
be an essential part of a music education
curriculum. Every class students take in school
focus on individual learning and individual
achievement except for music ensembles, which
are geared toward group learning and group
success. Lessons are where students receive the
individual instruction they need on their
specific instrument or voice, and are extremely
valuable to young musicians.
Both instrumental and vocal music lessons are
scheduled as “pull-outs” on a five-day cycle (as
opposed to the school’s four-day cycle) and
rotate throughout the periods of the day. Within
this system of scheduling, a student should miss
a particular class approximately once per month.
Students are expected to immediately make up all
missed work. Music ensemble grades are based on
work done both in the ensemble class and in
lessons. The portion of the grade from rehearsal
participation and the portion from lesson
attendance will be clearly split. In addition,
and more importantly, a student who misses a
lesson will still receive an assignment to
prepare for the following lesson.
Some consideration regarding grading will be
given to students who miss lessons due to tests
or for other valid reasons; however, this is
only when the student attempts to make up the
missed lesson and is working at an appropriate
level. This consideration cannot be given when
absences from lessons become commonplace.
