The East Rochester Elementary Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble that is directed by Mr. Gowman and is open to students in grades 5 & 6. Our focus is on the introduction and development of jazz skills, including style, technique, and improvisation. While learning these skills we play big band charts and also work on improvisation over standard progressions. We play with the standard "big band" set-up: 5 saxes (2 alto, 2 tenor, 1 bari); 4 trumpets; 4 trombones; 1 drumset; 1 aux. percussion; 1 bass; 1 guitar; and 1 piano. We will try to take as many qualified students as possible—even those on some instruments other than those just listed—but cannot take everyone.

Parents: Please note that our success depends on every child being at every rehearsal and being there on time. I will be contacting you to let you know if your child will be participating. Please let me know at that time if I will need to help find a carpool or other way of getting your child to rehearsal on time. Questions?
